Actress, producer, director, author, entrepreneur, philanthropist and humanitarian, Jada Pinkett Smith has approached life with the utmost poise and versatility. As an activist, she champions inclusion, education and social justice.
With her husband, Will Smith, she founded The Will & Jada Smith Family Foundation (WJSFF), dedicated to supporting individuals and organizations advance in areas where the need is great. Her work to empower women and girls continues through programs like the AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women and the Tisch Fusion Film Festival dedicated to showcasing the work of emerging female filmmakers. Jada’s passion for and commitment to providing greater access, opportunity and inclusion for underrepresented communities and young people in the entertainment industry has led to the launch of innovative programs and partnerships such as the Careers in Entertainment Initiative and Sundance Screenwriters Intensive to work with diverse independent filmmakers and artists.
Jada authored the New York Times best-selling children’s book “Girls Hold Up The World.” In 2011, with her daughter Willow, she joined the fight against human trafficking. Jada produced the award-winning TV documentary “Children for Sale” in partnership with The CNN Freedom Project, and her Don’t Sell Bodies Initiative serves as an information portal for human trafficking awareness. She is on the advisory board of Gucci’s female empowerment initiative, Chime for Change.
Born and raised in Maryland, Jada studied dance and acting at Baltimore School of the Arts and North Carolina School of the Arts. She launched her acting career on television with the notable series “A Different World.” In 1993, she landed her first feature film starring role in “Menace II Society,” followed by “The Nutty Professor."
Jada has enjoyed a rich career as a producer with features such as “The Secret Life of Bees,” “The Karate Kid,” and the documentary “Free Angela and All Political Prisoners.” She also produced the Tony Award winning Broadway musical “Fela.”
Other film credits include “Magic Mike XXL,” the hit comedy “Bad Moms,” and she currently plays Fish Mooney, in FOX’s “GOTHAM.” Jada will star in Universal Picture’s comedy “Girls Trip,” out summer 2017.
